Entry #4: The Only SEVEN Nursery Items You Need For Good Sleep - Items 5, 6 & 7

The time has come to finish up our list of the only seven things you need to create a sleep-inducing nursery!

I was hoping to finish my list in video format, alas I have been having pretty steady contractions for a couple of days now. So I think it’s best if I wrap this up and we move onto other exciting entries such as, “I had a baby” entries, which are inevitably coming very soon.

After leaving the doctor’s office yesterday, I stopped at Home Depot and purchased a new ceiling light fixture for my older kids’ room. I came home, got on a ladder, and rewired and installed the new light. So I think it’s safe to say that I’m nesting and delivery is around the corner. True story.

In my two previous entries I discussed the first four essential sleep items I felt I needed this go ‘round. Now we are onto the final three things.

Here we go:

A bassinet of some type for your bedroom -

American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) now recommends that babies sleep in your bedroom (in a separate sleeping space) for the first 12 months.  Some parents may choose to keep their baby in their room even longer than 12 months, some may be ready to move their baby into a separate nursery after the first 2-3 nights! My job is to tell you the official recommendation - you are free to make your own decision as far as what you feel is best for your family. Either way, you should have a bed option for the baby to be in your room when needed. I will be using the Halo Swivel Bassinet. You can also opt to put a full-sized crib into your bedroom - we don’t have room in our bedroom that though.

I am borrowing this from a friend. But here is a link to the Halo Swivel Bassinet in case you want to check out more details about out.

White noise machine -

I have always used the Marpac sound machine for my kids, and recommend that to my clients. However, the Hatch was created since I had my last baby and I’m dying to try it. This device has white noise options and night light options, which are usually not needed for an infant, but I’m thinking the night light option could come in handy when doing night feedings. The Hatch also has an “okay to wake” feature, which is great during the toddler years. Best of all, the device connects to your phone! I am excited to see how it works. I’ll report back. Click on pictures for links to both devices.

Video Monitor -

I relied on video monitors a lot when my big kids were babies. I liked that I could check on them quickly and hear them through the monitor without having to go into the actual room. Nothing takes the place of an actual in-person check-in of course, but I liked the flexibility that the video monitor provided. There have been many advances in the baby monitor space since I last purchased one. I didn’t want to get anything super fancy but also wanted something reliable. I chose this monitor based on reviews and also doing research on various features I was looking for. The brand is Infant Optics. Click on the picture below for the link, or click here.

Guess what folks!? That’s it!

That’s what I’m using to get me started!

That completes my list of the only seven nursery items you need for good sleep.

Remember that none of the items in my entries are ads. I actually purchased, borrowed, or was gifted (at my baby shower) all of these items and plan to actually use them with my baby. You can go back through the previous diary entries for links to all products, but here is a recap:

  • Crib, crib mattress, comfy fitted sheet

  • Blackout curtains

  • Swaddle blankets, two different swaddle products were discussed

  • Feeding/nursing chair in the room in which your baby will be sleeping

  • Bassinet for your room (when baby is not sleeping in their own room)

  • White noise

  • Video monitor

I really feel that these are the only items I need at this point to create the best sleep environment for my soon-to-arrive baby. You don’t have to go overboard, keep it simple!

I will keep you posted on baby news!!!
